So then, what do you do when you turn 50? Throw a wild party and get loads of corny birthday cards? Not in my case. I took the family to Nice (where we usually go a couple of times a year), crashed out by the pool and enjoyed long summer evening walks along the Promenade des Anglais after a good dinner in the old quarter. My teenage children decided they would go rollerblading and told me I had to come too just to prove that I wasn’t ‘past it’. We rented the skates and I clung on to my wife for nearly an hour. She got fed up and I was on my own. And in the remaining few minutes it took to get back to the rental shop I managed to stay on my feet! And I got hooked. Back in London, I determined to take lessons and soon met up with Lee at Skatefresh. He got me into shape and encouraged me to go for the instructors’ course. I’ve been rollerblading for two years and now know a whole new set of people. What do I like best? Two things. Firstly, being able to stroll along Serpentine Road and stop to chat to the many people you get to know . Secondly, the organised street skates. The freedom to skate on the roads in a pack of 250 + people on a warm summer’s day and a cold winter afternoon is exhilarating. Just try it and I bet you’ll love it.
When not rollerblading I have earned my living, for the last 30 years, as a teacher of Economics and Business Studies. At home, I spend time on internet Current Affairs message boards and chauffeur my children to football training, gymnastics and sleep-overs. My ‘boss’ does the shopping and cooking. I do the washing-up, laundry and ironing and bring everyone a cup of tea in bed in the morning. And I’ll buy you a cup of tea at the end of our first lesson. See you soon.
